In an age of technological growth and rising popularity in social media use, you never know how a simple post could affect you. For instance did you know that posting while you’re on holiday may invalidate your home insurance?
Keep these tips in mind when using social media to avoid the risk of increased claims or invalidating your policy.
- Keep a low profile on holiday – when travelling, it can be tempting to post more than usual to share the excitement of your trip. However, try to avoid sharing too many details about the specifics of your travel plans, as this may increase your risk of burglary by ‘advertising’ that you’re away. This practice could also invalidate your home insurance policy, as insurers may view your oversharing as, again, ‘advertising’ that your house is unoccupied and therefore failing to take reasonable care over your home security. One way to stay safe would be to post your holiday snaps once you’ve returned home.
- Avoid scammers – a scam known as ‘ghost broking’ is on the rise, using fake advertisements to lure social media users in by promising cheap home and contents insurance quotes and cheap car insurance quotes online. Always be sceptical of ‘too good to be true’ insurance advertisements on social media—they probably are.
Here at Bennett Christmas Insurance Brokers we know there are some very cheap insurance deals online but price shouldn’t be the only factor when considering your options. Insurance exists to give you peace of mind but it’s no good if it doesn’t cover you if you need to claim.
If you’ve found an insurance deal online, give us a call and run it by us so we can check to ensure it’s appropriate for your needs and there aren’t any nasty surprises in the small print.
